About Us

We welcome you to our site and invite you to explore.  We are a non-profit organization focused on providing services for individuals with special needs.

We desire to educate the public about our purposes, our goals, and our programs.

Our mission at Able to Serve, Inc. is to provide services and opportunities for persons with mental and physical disabilities.  We identify and serve these needs while promoting independence and self confidence within each service recipient.  Able to Serve strives to educate and promote awareness in the community, schools, and religious organizations so that additional opportunities will reach a greater number of people.

Our vision is that through partnerships with service recipients, families, and public as well as private entities, Able to Serve will be a leader in serving people with mental and/or physical disabilities.  Able to Serve will provide a spectrum of specialized services that are person-focused, technologically advanced, and managed in an effective and fiscally responsible manner.  We will offer families, ministry leaders, and persons with disabilities a place to discover that GOD is actively pursuing a relationship with them and, through that relationship, wants to use everyone to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a clear and understandable way to ALL PEOPLE.

We proudly announce the incorporation of "Able to Serve," effective January 1, 2003.

Able to Serve was created to serve the needs of people with physical and mental disabilities. We have recognized a tremendous need for additional services through our experience in the public school system, Special Olympics, and the spiritual opportunities offered by religious organizations in the state of North Carolina.  Able to Serve, Inc. has a vision to identify and serve those needs while promoting independence and self confidence within each person with a mental or physical disability.  Realizing the enormous size of this population of people, we will strive to educate and promote awareness in the community, schools, and religious organizations so that additional opportunities will reach a greater number of people.  In order to accomplish this purpose, Able to Serve will engage in the following activities:

1.  Services and opportunities directly for persons with disabilities.  Fifty percent of the efforts of Able to Serve will directly involve the person with a disability and their family.  These efforts will include transportation for individual outings, respite care for parents, and providing scholarships that enable persons to attend camps and related activities which would not have been possible otherwise.  Able to Serve will continually evaluate our effectiveness by communicating with the person with a disability and/or the family so that we are sensitive to the actual needs and provide the necessary services to meet them.  For some, the needs will be very specific and must be addressed individually.  For others, the needs may be met through involving them in a larger social activity.  We believe that no generic plan of action can be as successful as allowing individuals to make decisions concerning their quality of life and decisions for their personal future.

2.  Advocacy, Education and Awareness.  Forty percent of the efforts of Able to Serve will be directed toward the community.  We recognize that our effectiveness will not be determined by our accomplishments, but by the quality of life experienced by the population we serve.  In order to be successful, communities, schools, businesses, and religious organizations must partner together in a unified effort.  Volunteers at Able to Serve will participate in community events that promote opportunities for persons with disabilities while identifying and creating opportunities in communities that do not offer such events.  Education will be the key to opening doors for persons with disabilities in a variety of ways.  Programs, accessibility issues, and inclusion will be implemented when businesses, churches, civic organizations, and schools have a clearer understanding of what is needed and what they can do to provide independence and opportunities for persons with disabilities.  We believe that our advocacy efforts and love for all people can spread as others imitate the example we provide.

3.  Internet site for information.  Ten percent of our efforts will be concentrated on the Able to Serve website.  Our short term goal is twofold:  1) to provide a resource for organizations to learn about current training opportunities, additional resource materials, and services that we can provide in training, and 2) to offer a place for families to learn about training as well as submit feedback on additional services which would be helpful to them.  Our long range goal is provide a website that is interactive for persons with disabilities, as well as multiple resources in training leaders to be advocates and equip them for service.

4.  Sources of Financial Support.  Financial support will be solicited from a number of sources. Our largest source of planned income will derive from applications for grants, federal or state. The second source will come from corporate and private donations.  The third source will come from fundraising activities such as a golf tournament, yard sale, and various other community events which may raise more awareness than funds.

5.  Organizational Fundraising Program.  Able to Serve is operating at the grassroots level and is more in the planning than implementation stage of fundraising.  The majority of funds so far have been given by the board members in order to begin operating.   Using the three sources identified in number 2 above, the following financial plans have been discussed.

   a.  Grants.  Able to Serve has already contacted several organizations concerning grant writing and effective bookkeeping methods.  Classes are offered at various times, but we have not officially signed up pending our non-profit status.  The board has identified a qualified candidate and has the consent of her efforts on a volunteer basis. We have already begun arranging our financial and service records in order to present our company in a well organized and structured way.

   b.  Corporate and Private Donations.  Able to Serve believes that major companies are concerned with the well-being of persons with disabilities.  Upon completion of this application process, we will be soliciting companies to consider the services that we provide so that tax-exempt donations may be given.  We also believe that families who are searching for opportunities for their son/daughter with a disability will provide financial support as they recognize the service we provide.

   c.  Fundraising Events.  We have identified grants and donations as the main sources of income we feel will support our organization.  Smaller events such as a golf tournament may offer us further support.  All of these events will be staffed by volunteers and the cost of the event will be covered by Able to Serve or donated from another source.

The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19)

19. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20. teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you.  (HCSB)
