Cooking Crew’s Eggstravaganza

Article written collectively by participants part of the cooking crew alongside Mrs. Anne, Program Instructor.

The Cooking Crew is a group for participants who identified learning how to cook meals and building cooking skills as one of their personal goals for the year.

This group planned for April an “Eggstravaganza.”  Jeremy brought us the Cowboy Quiche recipe.  The Crew knew from looking at the recipe that we would be dicing and slicing lots of ingredients for the quiche.  Matthew cooked the bacon and sliced the medium onion for us.  Becky and Karlin mixed up the batter for the quiche, prepping the pans as well. De’Ontae, Jeremy, Becky, Karlin, and Grace measured and mixed up the ingredients. The quiche was very enjoyable and crustless as well.

Teresa, Ian, and Seth prepared the eggs to be boiled.  We cooked the eggs for 12 minutes and let them cool.  Then the group worked on peeling and cutting the eggs.  It was quite a chore.  The participants made it work. The group learned later that you can soak the eggs in cold water, and they will be easier to peel.  However, the eggs tasted great!

David E., Kelsey, and Brittany were making the Bunny cake.  They mixed up the batter and learned to use a hand mixer.  While the cake cooked, the group started working on crumbling the cookies, which would make the bunny brown.  Everyone helped with the cookie crumbling, which started with using their hands.  Kelsey showed them how to use a hard utensil to break the cookies into crumbs.  The group used spoon handles and had a great time doing so.

The first layer of the cake came out easily.  However, the second layer would not come out.  Kelsey and David worked on trying to get it out.  They finally did and put it back together again.  Brittany helped frost the cake.  David helped sprinkle the cookies all over the bunny.  Kelsey needed a piping bag to make the face.  David and Brittany watched Kelsey turn a sandwich bag into a piping bag.  They were amazed.  All the participants enjoyed our “Eggstravanza.”
