Celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month: Recognizing Ability and Potential

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the incredible strengths, contributions, and potential of individuals with developmental disabilities. At Able to Serve, we believe in highlighting the unique abilities of every individual and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement and success.

Understanding Developmental Disabilities

Developmental disabilities are conditions that emerge during childhood and impact an individual’s physical, learning, language, or behavioral development. These disabilities typically begin before a person turns 22 and can affect daily functioning. According to the  CDC Developmental Disabilities Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 6 children aged 3-17 years have one or more developmental disabilities, which can include:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Intellectual Disabilities
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Down Syndrome
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Learning Disabilities

It’s important to recognize that a developmental disability does not define a person’s potential. Many individuals with developmental disabilities lead fulfilling lives, develop meaningful relationships, and make significant contributions to their communities.
