Meet Jacob: Thriving in a Faith-Based Program for Adults with Disabilities

How Jacob Discovered Community, Confidence, and a Love for Service

“Hey Jacob!” The greetings rang out the moment Jacob walked through the restaurant door. His mother’s heart full of joy as she recognized the voices. They were Able to Serve volunteers. In that moment, she witnessed something every parent dreams of: her son being genuinely welcomed and valued.

Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays

Ask Jacob about his favorite days of the week. He’ll tell you without hesitation: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Those are his Able to Serve days. He looks forward to each one with unmistakable excitement.

What makes these days so special? For Jacob, it starts with his friends. “Hey Jacob!” echoes down the hall as he cheerfully walks in. He loves riding the ATS bus and getting out into the community for outings and service opportunities. He eagerly anticipates the dances and Christmas Party. Every spring he showcases his love of sports and his talents at the ATS Games. But really, it’s the whole experience. He’s part of something meaningful, surrounded by people who genuinely care.

A Heart That Knows What Matters

Sometimes the most profound moments come from simple questions. Last Christmas, Jacob’s sister asked him about his favorite present. Without hesitation, Jacob answered: “Baby Jesus.”  His response beautifully captures what Jacob continues to learn at Able to Serve. He’s learning values that matter, not just skills and activities. Through the program’s faith-centered approach, he discovers love and purpose.

Growing in Confidence and Skills

Jacob’s family has watched him blossom since joining Able to Serve. His vocabulary has expanded in wonderful ways. Consequently, he now has more tools to express himself. Through daily interactions, he’s learning how to get along with friends. Similarly, he’s understanding how to navigate social situations with comfortably. These lessons translate into real confidence both at ATS and in his everyday life.

Building Independence at Home

One of the most heartwarming changes involves household responsibilities. Jacob now takes on more chores at home with newfound confidence. After practicing tasks at Able to Serve, he volunteers to help around the house. This proves that the skills he’s learning give him the confidence to contribute and feel capable.

His participation in Backpack Buddies has sharpened his sorting and counting abilities. At the same time, it has awakened a desire to serve others. His love for reading and computer time has flourished through regular practice. The encouragement at ATS makes all the difference.

What It Means to Belong

For Jacob’s parents, Able to Serve provides something precious. They have peace knowing their son has a place where people celebrate him, not just accept him. It’s a place Jacob genuinely loves. Even better, he’s loved right back. There, he can try new things, serve others, and be a valued community member.

The consistent exposure to activities builds his confidence. The positive feedback reinforces his worth. The genuine relationships he experiences at ATS all work together. As a result, Jacob knows he belongs. He knows he matters. He knows he has a community that believes in him.

Community in Action

That spontaneous moment in the restaurant says it all. Volunteers greeted Jacob with genuine warmth and enthusiasm. It wasn’t rehearsed or forced—it was real. Jacob isn’t just a program participant. Instead, he’s a friend and a community member. He’s someone people are genuinely glad to see.

This is what Able to Serve’s mission looks like in action. This is what happens when we see each person’s God-given potential. Then we create spaces where that potential can flourish.

A Message for Families

Jacob’s mother wants other families to know something important. The impact of Able to Serve extends far beyond scheduled activities and skill-building. When your loved one walks into a room, people greet them with joy. Throughout the community, people recognize and value them. They develop skills that increase their independence and confidence. That’s the real success story.

Jacob has found his place. He has friends who care about him. He has activities he loves. He has skills he’s proud of. Most importantly, he has a community that sees him for who he truly is. He’s someone with gifts to share. He has a valued place in God’s family.
