The Heart of Able to Serve’s Mission: Our Core Values

The Heart of Our Mission: Living Out Our Core Values at Able to Serve

Every organization has a mission statement.  But what truly defines who we are when no one’s watching? What guides our decisions when the path isn’t clear? What holds us together when the work gets hard?

For us at Able to Serve, the answer is our core values.

This year, we are on an intentional journey to weave our five core values into everything we communicate, every story we tell, and every celebration we share. Not because these values are new—they’ve been our foundation all along—but because we want to be clear about who we are and why we do what we do.

Our Five Core Values

Community Minded: We’re Stronger Together

From day one, Able to Serve has been built on the belief that we need each other. When we gather—volunteers, staff, participants, donors, and supporters—we create something greater than the sum of our parts.

Being community minded means we don’t just serve individuals; we build relationships. We create spaces where people belong. We celebrate together, problem-solve together, and grow together.

When you see our community in action, you’ll notice it’s about all of us bringing our different talents, united in purpose and care for one another.

Goal Oriented: Progress with Purpose

Compassion without direction can be exhausting. Hope without a plan can be frustrating. That’s why we’re committed to being goal oriented in a way that honors the people we serve and the mission God has given us.

Being goal oriented means we work towards progress. We set clear objectives for our participants. We celebrate milestones. We know growth and transformation are possible.

What makes our approach different is our goals always serve people. We are working towards progress that matters to God, and to us—the kind that changes lives, builds confidence, and creates pathways to independence.

Person Focused: Every Individual Matters

In a world of numbers and statistics, it’s easy to lose sight of the individual. But at Able to Serve, every person has a name, a story and divine worth.

Being person focused means we meet individuals needs. We listen, we understand and we adapt. We recognize that the person in front of us isn’t a problem to solve or a project to complete—they’re a human being created in God’s image, worthy of respect, attention, and genuine care.

This value shapes everything from how we schedule our day (with flexibility for real life) to how we train our volunteers (to see the person, not just the task) to how we measure success (by individual growth, not just organizational metrics).

Christ Centered: Our Foundation and Our Hope

We don’t hide where our strength comes from. Able to Serve exists because we believe in a God who sees, loves, and moves toward those the world overlooks. Our work is an extension of Christ’s ministry—feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, caring for the vulnerable.

Being Christ centered means Jesus is both our motivation and our model. We serve because He first served us. We love because He first loved us. We extend grace because we’ve received grace. Our program is infused with the hope of the gospel—not as a requirement for participation, but as the foundation of everything we offer.

This value also keeps us humble. We know that any transformation we witness isn’t ultimately our doing. We’re simply helping with what God is already doing in people’s lives.

Good Stewards: Honoring What’s Entrusted to Us

Every dollar donated, every hour volunteered, every life entrusted to our care—these are sacred gifts. Being good stewards means we handle them with wisdom, integrity, and intentionality.

Good stewardship shows up in our financial practices . It shows up in how we care for our facilities and resources . It shows up in how we invest in our staff and volunteers . And it shows up in how we honor the people we serve.

When we’re careful with what we’ve been given, God entrusts us with more. When we honor the resources in our hands, we create space for greater ministry and deeper transformation.

Why This Matters Now

You might wonder why we’re taking time this year to spotlight values we’ve always held. Here’s why: in a world of noise and distraction, clarity is a gift. When we’re explicit about our values, several things happen:

  • We stay focused. When opportunities arise we can evaluate them against our core values. Does this align with who we are? Will it help us live out what we believe? If not, it might be good—but it’s not for us.
  • We build trust.  Our values become promises we make to our community. You can measure our faithfulness not just by our program, but by our consistency with these commitments.
  • We invite participation. When you understand our values, you can see where you fit. There’s a place for you here.
  • We tell better stories. Every time we share an update, celebrate a milestone, or ask for support, we can connect it back to these values.  You’ll understand not just what we do, but why—and how it all fits together.

The Heart of It All

We’re excited about this year ahead. Not because we’re doing something radically different, but because we’re getting radically clear about who we are. And when you know who you are, you can step confidently into what you’re called to do.

Thank you for being part of the Able to Serve community. Your partnership—through prayer, financial support, volunteer hours, or simply cheering us on—makes this work possible. We can’t wait to share more stories with you this year about how these values are coming to life.
