Why Mentorship Matters: The Gift That Goes Both Ways at Able to Serve

In January, we celebrate National Mentoring Month—but here, mentorship isn’t just something we highlight once a year. It’s a calling woven into the heart of everything we do.

More Than a Mentor

When people think of mentorship, they often picture someone experienced teaching someone else. What we’ve discovered is something even more meaningful—mentorship is a shared journey. It’s a circle of giving and receiving, where everyone learns, grows, and takes turns being both teacher and student.

A Community Built on Mentorship

Walk through our doors any day at any time and you’ll see mentorship everywhere. Volunteers walk alongside participants as they learn new skills and try new activities. Participants encourage one another and share what they know. Staff help create a safe, supportive space where growth is nurtured and celebrated.

This isn’t a place where mentors arrive with all the answers. It’s a community shaped by grace—where patience is practiced, joy is shared, and real friendships are formed, sometimes over something as simple as a game of Uno! In that shared experience, we grow together.

What You Give When You Mentor

When you step into a mentoring role, you bring meaningful gifts:

  • Your time — showing up says, “You matter.”
  • Your skills — whether practical, creative, or relational.
  • Your belief — seeing God-given potential where others may see limits.
  • Your patience — honoring growth at every pace.

What You Receive in Return

Our mentors often say they receive more than they expect:

  • Fresh perspective that refocuses what truly matters
  • Joy that is genuine, contagious, and deeply life-giving
  • Renewed purpose through meaningful service
  • Humility and growth as you continue learning alongside others

The Ripple Effect

Mentorship reaches far beyond a single moment. It reminds families their loved ones are valued, builds confidence and independence for participants, and helps shape a more united community. The encouragement you offer and the relationships you build become part of someone’s story long after the day ends.

An Invitation

We invite you to reflect with us: Who has walked alongside you? What gifts has God given you to share? What kind of impact do you feel called to make?

Every person has the ability to be a mentor. Whether you volunteer weekly, monthly, or for special events, there’s a place for you here. And we promise—you won’t just be giving. You’ll be changed, too.

Your Next Step

We’re honoring the mentors who make this community thrive—and inviting you to join them.
